About Jamie
Jamie Carter is a drummer and educator thrilled to be back in Nelson , BC where his own path in drumming and music education began. After a wonderful experience in the music program at Selkirk College, Jamie moved to Vancouver to pursue a Bachelor of Jazz Drumming at Capilano University. Jamie was fortunate to study with master drummers Blaine Wikjord and Dave Robbins and play in the "A" Band under the direction of Rejean Marois. After graduating Jamie continued to establish himself as an in demand free-lance drummer playing in many jazz, rock and R&B bands around the city. He has had the privilege of playing drums in the top level jazz orchestras of all 3 major music schools in Vancouver (Capliano, UBC, and VCC). Jamie has travelled the globe playing drums in the show band for Princess Cruises as well as working in casinos, theatres, festivals, touring bands etc.
Jamie has spent the last 10 years working in Richmond, BC as a Secondary Music Teacher and maintaining an active in demand free-lance performance schedule. He has had the pleasure of teaching literally thousands of students, directing award winning ensembles in both Jazz and Concert Band. Jamie's bands have toured to Havana, Cuba to study cuban percussion and perform. Jamie is very proud to have had students graduate from his program to go on to study at such famed schools as: Julliard, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman, McGill Jazz, Humber College Jazz, U of T, UBC, Capilano University etc.
In addition to Bachelors Degrees in both Jazz Drumming and Secondary Music Teaching, Jamie has recently completed his Masters in Music Education. (UBC, 2019) The focus of Jamie's graduate studies was primarily around the recent research connecting academic success to participation in musical ensembles. (ie. Kids in band get better grades. Why?)
Jamie has recently moved back to the Kootenays with his wife, Melanie, (also a music teacher) and his 2 daughters, Juniper and Andie aged 2 and 4.
